Pilots dazzle at the 2018 Waukegan Air Show
The two-blade propeller of the Red Starlet whirred to life, sending its orange-and-yellow pinstriped nose into a dizzying blur as Capt. Dan Booker began guiding the jet toward the runway.
Onlookers split their gaze between the Russian warbird aircraft as it prepared for its flyby and the planes that were already airborne in the crisp, blue sky above them. Performing a series of gravity-defying aerobatics, a biplane completed seven vertical barrel rolls, hovering for a weightless moment before turning and plummeting straight back down to the ground. The pilot righted the aircraft at seemingly the last minute and the plane zipped by, its wheels casting close shadows on the runway beneath it.
The Northern Illinois Air Show was in full swing in the early afternoon Sept. 8. The roar of jets rivaled the excited shrieks of children who stared, wide-eyed, as the jets screamed by, leaving a thick plume of smoke in their wake.
